PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS Settings
Getting perfect prints isn’t just about your printer — it’s about understanding your filament. This guide covers everything from storage to print settings for every material type.

General Filament Care
1. Storage: Keep It Dry
Why it matters: Filaments are hygroscopic — they absorb moisture from the air. Wet filament causes:
- Stringing and oozing
- Poor layer adhesion
- Bubbling and popping sounds
- Weak, brittle prints
How to store:
- Best: Airtight container with silica gel desiccant
- Good: Vacuum-sealed bags with moisture absorbers
- Minimum: Original sealed bag in a dry location
If your filament gets wet: Dry in oven at 60°C for 4-8 hours on a baking tray. Repeat every 2 days if exposed to a humid environment.
2. Prevent Tangles
Always secure the loose end when storing:
- Insert the end into the spool hole
- Use a spool clip
- Tape to spool edge
A single tangle can ruin an entire print mid-job.
3. Keep It Clean
Dust = clogged nozzles. Store filament in dust-free areas. Consider a filament dust filter attachment on your printer.
4. Temperature is Critical
Printing too hot: Chemical degradation, stringing, poor overhangs
Printing too cold: Extruder skipping, poor layer adhesion, clogging
Always print a temperature tower when trying a new filament to find the optimal range.


PLA Printing Guide
Best for: Prototypes, display models, decorative items, first prints
Why choose PLA:
- Easiest to print
- Low warping
- Minimal odor
- Biodegradable (made from corn starch)
- Wide color selection
Print Settings

| Nozzle Temperature | 190°C – 220°C |
| Bed Temperature | 50°C – 60°C (optional) |

| Cooling Fan | 100% after first layer |

Tips:
- Start at 200°C and adjust based on quality
- PLA doesn’t require a heated bed, but 50-60°C improves first layer
- Max cooling for overhangs and bridges
- Not suitable for outdoor use (softens at 60°C)

PETG Printing Guide
Best for: Functional parts, mechanical components, outdoor use, food-safe containers (with food-safe nozzle)
Why choose PETG:
- 3-5x stronger than PLA
- Heat resistant to 80°C
- Weather and UV resistant
- Chemical resistant
- Excellent layer adhesion

Tips:
- Higher temps = better layer adhesion
- Too much cooling = poor layer bonding
- Too little cooling = stringing
- PETG is “sticky” — use glue stick or painter’s tape on bed for easy removal
- Dry PETG is critical — wet PETG strings badly

TPU Printing Guide
Best for: Phone cases, gaskets, tyres, wearables, shock absorbers
Why choose TPU:
- Flexible and rubber-like
- Impact resistant
- Shore 95A hardness (most common)
- Durable and tear-resistant
Print Settings

| Nozzle Temperature | 210°C – 230°C |
| Bed Temperature | 40°C – 60°C |
| Print Speed | 15-30 mm/s (SLOW!) |
| Cooling Fan | 20-50% |
| Retraction Distance | Minimal (0.5-2mm) or disable |
Tips:
- SLOW SPEEDS are essential — TPU jams if printed too fast
- Direct drive extruders work best (Bowden setups struggle)
- Minimal retraction to prevent jams
- First layer: very slow (10-15 mm/s)
- May require a special slicer profile

ABS Printing Guide
Best for: Automotive parts, tool handles, outdoor enclosures, high-temp applications
Why choose ABS:
- Heat resistant to 98°C
- Impact resistant
- Can be smoothed with acetone vapour
- Stronger than PLA
Print Settings

Tips:
- Requires enclosure to prevent warping
- ABS warps badly in drafts — close all printer vents
- Use a brim or a raft for large prints
- Ventilation recommended (ABS fumes)
- Higher bed temp = less warping

Speciality Filaments
Silk PLA
- Same settings as standard PLA
- Print at lower layer heights (0.12-0.2mm) for best sheen
- Orientation affects appearance — experiment with part angle
Wood PLA
- Nozzle temp: 195-220°C
- Use 0.6mm nozzle (wood particles clog 0.4mm)
- Lower temp = lighter wood color
- Higher temp = darker, burnt appearance
Carbon Fiber (PLA/PETG)
- Requires a hardened steel nozzle (abrasive filament)
- Same temps as base material (PLA or PETG)
- Excellent strength-to-weight ratio
- Matte black finish
ASA
- Like ABS but UV-resistant
- Nozzle: 240-260°C
- Bed: 90-110°C
- Requires enclosure
- Best for outdoor applications


Troubleshooting
| Problem | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Stringing | Wet filament or too hot | Dry filament, lower temp 5-10°C, increase retraction |
| Warping | Bed too cold or drafts | Increase bed temp, use enclosure, add brim/raft |
| Poor layer adhesion | Too cold or too fast | Increase nozzle temp, slow down print speed |
| Clogging | Wet filament, dust, or wrong temp | Dry filament, clean nozzle, check temp tower |
| Brittle prints | Old filament or printed too cold | Use fresh filament, increase temp |
| Elephant’s foot | Bed too hot | Lower bed temp, enable “elephant foot compensation” in slicer |
Temperature Towers: Find Your Sweet Spot
What is a temperature tower?
A test print that prints the same object at different temperatures so you can visually compare quality.
How to use:
- Download the temperature tower STL for your material
- Slice with temperature changes (e.g., 220°C → 210°C → 200°C → 190°C)
- Print and examine each section
- Choose the temperature with the best quality, strength, and minimal stringing
