SA Filament SBS Filament – Red – 1.75mm | 1kg

R289.00

Tough & Impact Resistant | Slightly Flexible | Low Warping | High-Speed Capable | Proudly South African

The SA Filament SBS Filament is a tough and versatile 3D printing material that offers an excellent balance between strength, impact resistance, flexibility and ease of printing.

SBS (Styrene-Butadiene-Styrene) provides more flexibility than many conventional rigid filaments, allowing printed parts to absorb impacts and stress without cracking as easily. Its relatively low tendency to warp also makes it an attractive alternative for functional parts where standard PLA may be too brittle and ABS may be more difficult to print.

With support for printing speeds of 50–500mm/s, SA Filament SBS is suitable for both conventional and modern high-speed FDM 3D printers.

Strong with Added Flexibility

One of the main advantages of SBS is its balance between rigidity and flexibility.

Unlike very rigid materials that can crack when subjected to sudden impacts, SBS has some ability to flex and absorb stress.

This makes it particularly useful for:

  • Protective components
  • Enclosures
  • Mechanical parts
  • Functional prototypes
  • Grips and handles
  • Containers
  • Clips
  • Brackets
  • Frequently handled components

It provides a useful middle ground between conventional rigid materials and highly flexible filaments such as TPU.

Excellent Impact Resistance

SBS is particularly useful for components that may experience knocks, drops or repeated handling.

Its toughness makes it a strong alternative when ordinary PLA may be too brittle for the intended application.

This makes SBS suitable for functional components, prototypes and products that need to withstand everyday use.

Lower Warping

SBS offers relatively low warping characteristics compared with materials such as ABS.

This can make larger functional parts easier to produce while reducing the challenges associated with shrinkage and corner lifting.

For users who require a tougher material but don’t necessarily want the printing challenges associated with ABS, SBS can be an excellent alternative.

SBS vs PLA

Standard PLA is easy to print and produces rigid parts, but it can be relatively brittle.

SBS provides:

  • Greater impact resistance
  • Increased toughness
  • More flexibility
  • Better resistance to cracking under impact

PLA remains an excellent choice for general-purpose and decorative printing, while SBS is better suited to applications where toughness and impact resistance are important.

SBS vs ABS

ABS is a popular engineering material with good strength and temperature resistance, but it can be more challenging to print due to shrinkage and warping.

SBS provides:

  • Lower warping
  • Easier printing
  • Greater flexibility
  • Excellent impact resistance

This makes SBS an attractive alternative for many functional applications where maximum heat resistance is not the primary requirement.

SBS vs TPU

SBS should not be confused with fully flexible filament such as TPU.

TPU can produce soft, rubber-like components, whereas SBS remains considerably more rigid.

SBS is therefore ideal when a component needs some flexibility and impact absorption without becoming soft or highly flexible.

High-Speed Printing Capability

SA Filament specifies a broad printing-speed range of:

50–500mm/s

This makes the material suitable for conventional printers as well as modern high-speed machines.

The optimum printing speed will depend on the printer, hotend, nozzle size, layer height and model being produced.

Smooth Surface Finish

SBS can produce an attractive smooth surface, making it suitable for functional parts where appearance is also important.

Applications include:

  • Product prototypes
  • Display components
  • Enclosures
  • Consumer-product prototypes
  • Housings
  • Decorative functional parts

Chemical Smoothing

SBS can also be chemically smoothed, allowing visible layer lines to be reduced and surfaces to achieve a smoother appearance.

Chemical post-processing should always be performed using appropriate safety equipment, ventilation and handling procedures.

Excellent for Functional Prototyping

The combination of toughness, moderate flexibility and easier printing makes SBS particularly useful for prototyping.

It can be used for:

  • Product enclosures
  • Mechanical components
  • Protective housings
  • Clips and brackets
  • Handles and grips
  • Containers
  • Wearable components
  • Functional prototypes
  • Test components
  • Small production runs
